ARTIST STATEMENT

INTERIOR LANDSCAPES

Romantic, warm, painterly and inviting, are words that describe my art. My inspiration often comes from the way I see the world through the lens of a camera. My photographs are source material and often become the initial ”sketch” for my paintings. I paint layers of translucent oil over poured acrylic on canvas to create voluptuous, luminous forms defined by structure and color.

This current series titled Interior Landscapes is about the passage of time in the same way as images of light and shadow describe a fleeting moment. These paintings include a narrative element that refers to home and domesticity. The idea is that pillows contain the sensory experience of the journey traveled at night; the folds and creases of a rumpled bed are mysterious and evoke an unseen presence that becomes a metaphor for the body. Beds are “loaded” with cultural and social significance, a secret place where the dramas of life are played on the most private of stages. My paintings suggest mystery: a world of soft focus-smoke and mirrors. The forms I paint are intimate, erotic and sensual- they are personal landscapes but are also evocative of structures found in the physical world.

My recent work is an extension of interest in collage and photography. Fabric folds become sculptural forms and emphasize the tension dimensional space abstract passages as I continue to examine the relationship between the real and the imaginary and particularly, light and shadow.
