NORMA GREENWOOD-BIO

I suppose I was born into painting. My grandfather’s paint store in Brooklyn was my favorite place to play; Shiny paint cans, tubes of color and the smell of linseed oil permeating the store were imprinted on me at a very early age.

Art has always defined my life. I attended children’s Saturday morning drawing classes at the Brooklyn Museum and then classes at Pratt Institute for high school students. I have a Graduate degree in Fine Arts from Hunter College New York where I had the good fortune to study with masters such as Robert Motherwell and William Baziotes. Further studies in Collage with Leo Manso and classes in photography at ICP extended my palette.

I've received grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Abby Austin Mural Arts Fellowship from the National Academy Museum, a George Sugarman Award, a Ludwig Vogelstein grant and a NYFA workshop award. In 2008, I completed a public art commission for the Jacksonville International Airport Terminal A.  The installation titled; "Cloudscapes" consists of two 9’ x 11’ glass mosaic tile murals.

My art is included in private and public collections including the American Museum of Folkarts, Columbia Pictures, Inc, At&T, Citicorp, CUNY Queensborough Community College Gallery.

Extensive foreign travel and exposure to international arts and design has continued to enlarge my artistic vision.
My recent work is an extension of interest in collage, photography and surface design. Fabric folds become sculptural forms and emphasize the tension dimensional space abstract passages as I continue to examine the relationship between the real and the imaginary.
