| ARTIST STATEMENT For the last few years, the focal point of my career has been developing public art projects. This year, I was awarded a public art commission by the Jacksonville International Airport in Florida, for two murals I designed, which will be interpreted in glass mosaic tiles. I was a finalist with the MTA Arts For Transit, New York City. I’ve worked in many media including film, paint, encaustic, metal and handmade paper as a means for making art that communicates across cultural and political borders. My paintings are inspired by my photographic images; source material that serves to both focus and reinforce my vision. Describing the boundaries of abstraction and a keen attention to color and paint surface are qualities that define my art. I am a native New Yorker and have a graduate degree in Art from Hunter College where I was a student of Robert Motherwell. His classes in art history and studio art were one of the strongest influences in my formative years as an artist. International travel and time spent in Asia has had an marked effect on my work. In 2007 I was a Fellow at the National Academy Abby Austin Mural Workshop. I won the Queens Council on the Arts Regrants Award for individual Artists, the 2007 Ludwig Vogelstein Award and a George Sugarman Grant. |
